Tunable “Doniach Phase Diagram” for strongly-correlated nanoclusters

چکیده
Exact diagonalization calculations reveal that the energy spacing ∆ in the conduction band tunes the interplay between the local Kondo and non local RKKY interactions, giving rise to a “Doniach phase diagram” for a nanocluster with regions of prevailing Kondo or RKKY correlations. The parity of the total number of electrons alters the competition between the Kondo and RKKY correlations. This interplay may be relevant to experimental realizations of small rings or quantum dots with tunable magnetic properties. Below a critical value Vc of the hybridization the susceptibility exhibits a low-T exponential activation behavior determined by the interplay of the spin gap and ∆.

Tuning the Magnetism of Ordered and Disordered Strongly-correlated Electron Nanoclusters
Recently, there has been a resurgence of intense experimental and theoretical interest on the Kondo physics of nanoscopic and mesoscopic systems due to the possibility of making experiments in extremely small samples. We have carried out exact diagonalization calculations to study the effect of energy spacing ∆ in the conduction band states, hybridization, number of electrons, and disorder on t...
متن کاملA ug 1 99 3 Correlated mean field Ansatz for the Kondo necklace
We study the ground state phase diagram of the pseudospin model introduced by Doniach to describe the essential physics of Kondo lattices. We use variational trial states which augment the usual mean field solution by incorporating various intersite correlations. A composite spin correlation describing the antiparallel alignment of fluctuating triplets is found to be particularly favourable for...
متن کاملDisordered Kondo nanoclusters: Effect of energy spacing
Exact-diagonalization results for Kondo nanoclusters alloyed with mixed-valence impurities show that tuning the energy spacing D drives the system from the Kondo to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) regime. The interplay of D and disorder gives rise to a D versus concentration T=0 phase diagram very rich in structure. The parity of the total number of electrons alters the competition bet...
متن کاملInteraction-dependent photon-assisted tunneling in optical lattices: a quantum simulator of strongly-correlated electrons and dynamical gauge fields
We introduce a scheme that combines photon-assisted tunneling by a moving optical lattice with strong Hubbard interactions, and allows for the quantum simulation of paradigmatic quantum many-body models. We show that, in a certain regime, this quantum simulator yields an effective Hubbard Hamiltonian with tunable bond-charge interactions, a model studied in the context of strongly-correlated el...
متن کاملOrbital physics in optical lattices: From strong correlations to twisted superfluidity
Orbital physics plays a significant role for a vast number of important phenomena in complex condensed matter systems such as high-Tc superconductivity and unconventional magnetism. The interaction in strongly correlated bosonic systems promotes particle to higher orbital states, which has been mostly neglected in favor for single-band Hamiltonians. In this regard, optical lattices offer an ide...
